New Fire Apparatus Purchase
Updated On: Nov 17, 2015

Dear Local 2180,

This evening Council Members unanimously approved the purchase of (3) three new fire apparatus. We will be adding a Brush Rig and two Type 1 Engines to the fleet in 2016. These purchases would have never come to fruition without the help of many. I want to thank all of our members that have documented in detail the issues and struggles that we all have faced on a daily basis. The documentation and communication you all have provided over the last several months armed the Executive Board with the information needed to secure this small victory.

Although tonight we acknowledge a win, we have much more work to do. Last night Truck 51 unfortunately went out of service due to a broken leaf spring and E52 broke a steering box. These issues are frustrating and negatively impact our day to day operations. Rest assured that these issues are being communicated to the ultimate decision makers of the City. The Executive Board will continue to advocate for the safety of our members and the citizens we have sworn to protect. Our ultimate apparatus goal is to have a well funded replacement plan that would prevent us from ever being in this situation again.

Another small victory was us stopping the Fire Chiefs plan to use ALS pass through fees. The Fire Chief wanted to use an annual amount of 160,000 dollars of pass through fees to purchase fire apparatus. The Executive Board adamantly opposed the plan and we were able to persuade the City Manager to not use ALS monies. These ALS monies should be used to support our ALS program and fire apparatus purchases should come from the General Fund.

I want to take this opportunity and recognize Jeff Peter for all of his hard work and dedication he has provided to our apparatus fight and to our Local. Tonights victory wouldn't have been possible without him. Jeff has provided invaluable data, historical background and has been our subject matter expert in meetings with key City Officials. Thanks JP!

Keep up the good fight.

Fraternally,

DR
